LCI was competitively awarded one of four DARPA-sponsored Sensor Design Efforts (SDE) awards to develop and test an advanced integrated eye-safe true 3D flash LIDAR imaging sensor to enable target identification in stressing environments. The goal of the program was to develop a sensor with the capability of using multiple, angle-diverse 3D LIDAR looks to generate images of targets hidden by foliage and camouflage. LCI evaluated a number of 3D LIDAR receiver approaches, performed system engineering trade analyses, and developed 3D LIDAR system design concepts for Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (TUAV) and Organic Airborne Vehicle (OAV) platforms. While the development schedule for the ROIC-based 3D technology selected for the receiver was ultimately incompatible with the DARPA schedule for system flight data collection, this technology is now being incorporated into the ROAR® system.
